Quality vs Cheap Chain Saw

When making any purchase you want to make sure it is a product that is built to last rather than a cheap one that will break easily; but when spending the amount of money required to buy a chainsaw, you especially want to make sure that it is a high quality product that will last as long as possible. This part of Surf’n’Buy’s buying guide breaks down everything you need to know about differentiating between a quality and a cheap chainsaw so that you know you are getting quality and that you will get the most out of your money.

Engine Power

Depending on the project or material you are working with, you will need a chainsaw with the engine power to keep up. Engine power is measured in CCs and this ranges anywhere from 40 to 75 CCs of power. The tougher the material, the more power you will need for a better quality and more successful cut overall. Engine power depends on a number of different factors, but the most prominent is the type of fuel being used to power the chainsaw.

Fuel and Power

The strongest chainsaws are gas powered chainsaws, which usually use petrol as their power source. These chainsaws come with drawbacks, however, such as toxic emissions and expensive upkeep, which can be an irritation for most users. Alternatives, such as electrically powered and battery powered chainsaws have been developed to cut down on emissions, but these chainsaws are not always as powerful as the gas powered chainsaws, so keep this in mind when considering and selecting your power sources to make sure that you get the right option for your needs.

Comfortability and Grip

When you are using the chainsaw it is best to be as comfortable as possible to help you carry and hold the chainsaw for longer periods of time. Most chainsaws now have ergonomically designed bodies to fit the groove of your waist to make it much more comfortable, and more expensive options have smart technologies to make the vibrations weaker. You should also look for options with a grip around the handle of the chainsaw so that you can make sure you have enough grip on the machine for both safety and comfortability reasons.

Smart Features

Smart features are not an absolute necessity, but they can go a long way if purchased. Smart features include anti-vibration technology and quick start technology to reduce the amount of time you spend cranking the chainsaw. These features are ideal for beginners, as it makes the chainsaw a lot easier and a lot more comfortable to use, especially for longer and more complex projects that require you to use the chainsaw for longer periods of time. Although these features are not vital, they can go a long way in helping you to use your chainsaw properly.

Maintenance Needs

The final differentiation in the quality of the chainsaw you may pick is how it is maintained and how difficult this is. Maintenance is an essential part of owning a chainsaw, but it can be quite difficult if you don’t know what you’re doing. Higher quality chainsaws will have the option of tool free chain adjustments and tool free access to the motor, all of which reduces the complexity of maintaining your chainsaw. If you are a beginner, these features can be incredibly helpful to get you started with using a chainsaw and learning how to properly maintain it.

Factors to Consider When Buying Chain Saw

When making any purchase, there are a number of factors that you need to take into consideration so that you know what you’re buying and that you are buying the right product for you. Chainsaws come in many different kinds, and knowing which one is the right one for you can be tricky. This part of our guide gives you a few of the considerations that you need to keep in mind to make sure you know what chainsaws are out there, but also which features and specifications will suit you and your needs better than the rest.

Gas vs Electric vs Battery

There are three main methods of powering a chainsaw – Gas, Electric and Battery powered, and each has its advantages and drawbacks when it comes to the use and the power of the chainsaw. This part of our guide outlines the three different power methods so that you can better understand them and the effect they have on the chainsaw and how it is used. This will help you to decide which power method will be best suited for your needs or wants so that you can find the right chainsaw for your needs.

– Gas

Gas powered chainsaws are the most common chainsaws and they use petrol or gasoline in order to run the motor. These chainsaws are unrestricted by cables and are generally a lot more powerful than the other power methods, however they can also be a lot more expensive to maintain and run. These chainsaws are ideal for larger projects and professional use, as they are much more powerful and reliable.

– Electric

Electric chainsaws are powered by plugging the chainsaw into an electrical mains. These chainsaws have the advantage of being much more environmentally friendly, as they do not give out harmful emissions. Electric chainsaws, however, are restricted to an electrical mains and this can pose more health and safety hazards than gas or battery, as the cable can be a tripping hazard.

– Battery

The final power source is battery, which on the surface is the best of both worlds. There are no harmful emissions and there is no restriction from cables. However, battery powered chainsaws have a tendency to be less powerful and can take a long time to charge in between uses. This may not be an issue for home use, but can make professional use difficult, as the waiting time between charges can be a frustration and extra batteries can be expensive.

Soft or Hard Wood?

Hard woods, such as dogwood, hard maple, beech and ask will require a powerful chainsaw, as they are much denser than other woods. These woods will be better cut with a powerful gas chainsaw to make sure that you get through the entire tree without an issue and without stalling your chainsaw. Softer woods such as pine will easily be cut with a less powerful chainsaw or one that is powered with electric or battery power. This is all dependant on what kind of wood you are cutting, so take all of this into consideration before you purchase a chainsaw.

Your Experience

If this is going to be your first chainsaw then look for the smaller chainsaws, as these will help your to get used to using chainsaws and get a feel for chopping wood and other materials. Bar lengths between 12 inches and 18 inches are best suited for beginners, whereas 20 inches and longer is generally recommended for more experienced chainsaw users. Getting used to your chainsaw before upgrading it is a much safer and more responsible way of using this powerful machinery.

How Often Will You Use It?

If you are only purchasing a chainsaw for occasional use then an electrical option is ideal, as this will cut out the need for maintenance and fuel consumption that comes with gas chainsaws. Gas chainsaws are better for frequent or professional use, as they are much more reliable and generally more powerful, but they do require a lot more upkeep than an electrical option. It depends on your preferences, but for a simple home use chainsaw, the best option is a smaller electrically powered chainsaw to fit your needs.

Where Will You Use It?

The environment you are using your chainsaw in is an important factor to consider. If you are cutting wood on a large area of land or spacious garden then you will want to consider a cordless option such as gas or battery, as this will take away any restriction from power outlets and cables. If it is a smaller area or closer to electrical outlets then there is no issue having a cord option, but make sure to note that the cord can be a safety concern if the area is not properly prepared for working with your chainsaw.

Handle Positions

There are two main handle positions on a chainsaw, top handle and rear handle. Top handles are designed to be used whilst elevated, for example when trimming in the tree itself. It is a specialised chainsaw for professional use and not the focus of our guide, but still important to take into consideration if this is what you may be looking for. The second handle position, and the focus of our guide, is rear handled chainsaws, which are designed for cutting and trimming on the ground. They are the most common chainsaw type you will find online and are suitable for almost any job you have in the home or for professional use.

Wood Type

As we have previously stated, wood type is an important consideration, but you will want to make sure that you check what wood you will be using most frequently to make sure the chainsaw is powerful enough to cut through it. As well as the chainsaw power, you also need personal strength to help the chainsaw power through the wood, as it takes leverage from you also to power through the wood. Make sure to check out our power recommendation guides to get the right power level for your needs.

How comfortable your chainsaw is to hold and carry can make a huge difference in how it carries and how long you can work for. The best chainsaws will have an ergonomic design and different features to make using the chainsaw much more comfortable. Check out the different features that you may want, or even those that you feel you may need, to get a chainsaw that best fits your needs. There are many features out there to choose from, so take your time and do a little bit of research. All of our recommended products have several comfortability features to help make using the chainsaw more comfortable.

Guide Bar Length Recommendation

There are a number of different bar lengths, and each is ideal for different projects and applications, so make sure to read this guide to help find the right bar size for your needs.

  • 12-14 inches: This is the smallest size available and is ideal for pruning, limbing and felling small trees, as It is easy to control and small enough for fiddly work.
  • 14-16 inches: Between 14 and 16 inches there is not a lot that can be done, other than cutting light, soft firewood and trimming shrubbery, as this size is slightly more difficult to handle.
  • 16-18 inches: At this size you can begin to cut medium firewood and bucking trees, but be careful to note the width of the tree to make sure you don’t need a larger bar.
  • 18 inches and larger: Any larger than 18 inches is bucking trees only, as this length is difficult to use for small and fiddly jobs such as pruning and trimming unless you are highly experienced.

Power Size Recommendation

The power of the engine is measured in CCs, and this can range and vary from chainsaw to chainsaw. This recommendation gives you a rough guide of what power you will need for your project.

  • 30cc: Best for light jobs such as limbing, trimming and pruning, as they do not require a lot of force to cut through small branches.
  • 30-40cc: This is mostly regarded as small tree felling power, as it will require slightly more power than cosmetic gardening due to the thickness of the tree.
  • 35-45cc: For light firewood under 10 inches, best for cutting and shaping logs to make them suitable for log fires.
  • 40-50cc: This range is for medium firewood and harder woods over 10 inches as these require more force to split the logs properly.
  • 50cc and Higher: 50ccs and higher is designated for large logs, but generally should only be used by professionals as the risk of injury is much higher.

Chain Saw Tips and Tricks

As with all out guides, Surf’n’Buy team aim to help you out as much as possible so that you are completely satisfied with all of the purchases you make using our helpful buying guides. To help you to make the most of your money and make your purchase go further, we like to add a section of tips and tricks that you can use to really make your chainsaw work for you. So, take a read and try these tips at home.

Understanding the Kickback

Kickback happens when the tip of the guide bar hits another object or when the bar get pinched by wood on either side of the bar. This makes the saw chain change direction abruptly and create what is known as kickback, as the chain stops with quite a force. There are ways to avoid kickback, such as using anti-kickback chains, keeping your chain sharpened and avoiding touching the guide bar to any solid materials. Kickback is a common issue, but it can be avoided with care and attention.

Safety  is the primary concern when using machinery such as a chainsaw. You should begin by preparing the area that you are going to work in, remove any major hazards and prepare the woods or materials that you are going to use. Ensure that you wear gloves and goggles at all times to protect your hands and eyes from flying splinters, and practice proper handling when holding the chainsaw. All of this combined should help to protect you when using the chainsaw and keep you safe use after use.

Uses for Sawdust

When using your chainsaw you’ll notice that you get an awful lot of sawdust and wood chippings as cast offs from your work, and it doesn’t seem like there is a lot you’ll be able to do with them. However, there are a few ways in which woodchip can come in handy. For example, it makes great kindling for a fire, you can compact it into a fire brick or simply line the base of a fire. It’s also an excellent starting point for mulch and other compost heaps to get the best nutrients for your plants. There are many websites that offer advice for your sawdust, so make sure to check out what you can do to minimise your waste.

Cutting Straight

If your chainsaw isn’t cutting straight, the most likely issue is that the cutting teeth are not even. Uneven teeth will cut one side of the wood more successfully than the other side and your cut will be uneven. When sharpening your teeth, make sure they are as even as possible to create an even and successful cut throughout the wood. Keep this in check to get even and straight firewood and cleanly cut limbs.

Seating the Chain

Newer or damaged chains may have some rougher edges and these will grab onto the carbide and cause damage to both the chain and the carbide. The best way to avoid this is to set up and ‘seat’ the chain properly. Leave the side knobs loose and hold the body of the chainsaw as you sharpen the teeth. You should feel the chatter as the spin smooths out and the chain begins to hold onto the teeth properly. The should only be necessary once, when setting up the chainsaw chain and teeth.

Chainsaws are an excellent addition to the tool shed, and there are many products and brands that offer great features and great quality. This Surf’n’Buy’s guide was developed to make purchasing a chainsaw easier and much less stressful. We are certain that you will be able to find a chainsaw that will best suit your needs and provide you with the amount of power and comfort that you need.
